Reference documents
There are a number of resources available to you to help guide you when submitting an application for research.
Research governance
The Research Governance Framework defines the principles of good research governance and is vital for ensuring that health research is conducted to high scientific and ethical standards. HTA-funded researchers must work within this framework. Further information can be found on the DH website. More information is also available in our Investigators zone
Patients and public involvement
Guidance about involving the public in research is available in two publications produced by INVOLVE (formerly Consumers in NHS Research):
- A guide to paying members of the public actively involved in research (pdf, 451kb)
Primary research
Guidance is available for those looking to submit proposals for primary research.
- The Department of Health offers guidance about non-commercial, externally funded R&D in the NHS. This covers responsibilities; definition of the research and associated patient care costs; NHS support and treatment costs; and procedures.
- A useful guide is available giving examples of what kind of costs should be allocated in the full proposal details as research, NHS support or NHS treatment costs. Attributing costs of externally-funded non-commercial research in the NHS
-
All HTA-funded research teams are expected to conduct their research in accordance with the Medical Research Council's Good Research Practice Guidelines.
-
The MRC and the Department of Health have devised a Clinical trials toolkit
-
We recommend that all primary research projects appoint a dedicated project/trial manager. We have produced a generic job description which may help you with this. This is available through the Investigators zone
