Research governance

All HTA-funded research teams are expected to conduct their research in accordance with Good Clinical Practice. Please refer to the Medical Research Council's Good Clinical Practice Guidelines.

Research Governance Framework

The Research Governance Framework defines the principles of good research governance and is vital for ensuring that health research is conducted to high scientific and ethical standards. HTA-funded researchers must work within this framework.

Primary research

Under the Research Governance Framework we are required to ensure that the primary research projects we fund establish a Trial Steering Committee, a Data Monitoring and Ethics Committee and appoint a sponsor. Guidelines about this are available to download here.

Trial managers

We recommend that all primary research projects appoint a dedicated project/trial manager. We have produced a generic job description which may help you with this.

Please let us know about any appointments you make. The HTA programme offers membership of the UK Trial Managers Network (TMN), which provides support and advice for running successful trials. Membership of the TMN is available to all trial managers of projects funded by the public or charitable sectors.
