Making the most of new opportunities

Under new arrangements, government funding for health research will be split between the NIHR and the MRC with the NIHR receiving £992 million, an increase of over £290 million. In turn the HTA programme will see its budget rise substantially, allowing it to expand both its commissioned and researcher-led funding routes to enhance its portfolio of translational research.

Commissioned research

Through our commissioned research stream we consult with the NHS to identify the questions it most needs the answers to, then commission the research to address the most important evidence gaps. We do this under the guidance of expert advisory panels. The new arrangements will present many more opportunities for us to fund this sort of work.

Find out more about our commissioned research stream through our free information leaflet (pdf, 378kb) or visit our funding pages for current opportunities.

Researcher-led work stream

Through our researcher-led funding route we commission clinical trials proposed directly by researchers, as well as advertising calls for proposals in themed areas. The new arrangements will present many more opportunities for us to fund this sort of work, with at least one themed call planned per year.

Job opportunities

The National Coordinating Centre for HTA which manages the HTA programme is planning a recruitment campaign to support the expansion in the programme’s work. Look out for news on our job opportunities page.
