NHS to pit Avastin against Lucentis in AMD trial
In a landmark move, the UK is to launch its own head-to-head study of Genentech and Novartis™ blindness drug Lucentis (ranibizumab) versus the US biotechnology giant™ Avastin (bevacizumab) after it emerged that ophthalmologists and primary care trusts are shunning the approved medicine in favour of the much cheaper cancer therapy Avastin, which is frequently used off-label to treat the wet form of age-related macular degeneration. The HTA programme has commissioned researchers from the Mother & Infant Research Unit at the University of York to review the existing research evidence to assess which methods are the most clinically and cost-effective for encouraging mothers to start and continue to breastfeed in special and intensive care settings.
